Background
A brief introduction to Design Tokens in the context of torquens.
Torquens is a methodology for defining design intent once and transforming it into context-specific outputs.
Whilst design tokens as they are currently generally used provide a solid foundation for ensuring consistency of individual values within and between Design System implementations, they fall short when it comes to representing patterns.
Designers and developers use radically different techniques to apply design tokens to their outputsโwhich are reflective of, and optimised for, the tooling in use by each discipline.
The friction these differences generate in the handover process increases the chance for deviation and inconsistency.
Torquens, as a methodology, addresses this by proposing a higher order set of design tokens that can be used to describe more substantial design fragments, to be shared within and between implementations.
